Mobile access credentials, issued to Apple Walletand Google Wallet
Most access control programs still run on a plastic card that has to be printed, handed over, and replaced when it goes missing. Meanwhile nearly every cardholder already carries a device they unlock dozens of times a day.
The market is moving accordingly. Omdia forecasts mobile credentials growing at a 45% compound annual rate over five years, against 4.5% for physical credentials. Physical cards are not going away, but mobile is now the expectation rather than the upgrade.
Acre HID Origo Wallet issues credentials straight to Apple Wallet and Google Wallet from Acre Access Control. The credential lives on the phone or watch the cardholder already uses. There is no card to produce and no separate mobile application for them to open.
Issued from the same interface your operatorsalready use
The integration does not add a system to learn. When HID Wallet is licensed on the instance, a Send HID Wallet invite option appears on Card Assignment, alongside Guest Pass and Employee Badge.
From there:
- Open the person's record in Acre Access Control and confirm their email address is on file.
- Choose Send HID Wallet invite.
- The cardholder receives an email with a secure link.
- They tap the link, sign in with their Apple or Google ID, and add the pass to their phone or watch.
- The credential appears on the person's recordand presents at the reader like any other card.
Acre Access Control stays the system of record. HID Origo handles the credential cryptography and delivery to the device, then reports status back, so the person's record always reflects what is actually on the phone.
What the cardholder experiences
Setting expectations before a rollout matters more than the technology. Here is what they see.
On iPhone, the email carries an Add to Apple Wallet button. One tap adds the pass in the wallet. To present it, the cardholder double-clicks the side button. Express Mode can allow a tap without waking the screen (reader and deployment dependent).
On Android, the email carries a Save to Google Wallet button. The pass saves to Google Wallet, and the cardholder holds the phone near the reader. Work Profile deployments are supported, with the pass in the personal profile (reader and deployment dependent).
Managing the full life of a credential
Issuance isthe easy part. The value shows up when someone leaves or loses a device.
- Revoke removes a credential outright when a person leaves or a device is lost.
- Suspend deactivatesa credential and allows it to resume later without reissuing anything.
- Automatic cleanup removes the pass on the HID side when a person or card assignment is deleted in Acre Access Control, so no credential is left orphaned.
One operational detail worth knowing. Access is denied at the reader as soon as are vocation is processed. The pass may still appear on the phone until the device next syncs, which is usually a matter of minutes for a device that is online.
Knowing where every credential stands
Three reports give administrators a straight answer on what has been issued and what is being paid for.
- Pending Invitations shows who has been invited but has not accepted, with the date the invite was sent.
- License Report shows credentials licensed, provisioned, and active.
- Card Report lists invites and active cards with current status and expiration dates.
Sending an invitation does not consume a license. A credential counts once the cardholder has registered it on a device.
What you need to run it
Software. Acre Access Control, with HID Wallet licenses added and configured on the instance. Acre HID Origo Wallet is available in Classic Client v26.8.3 and Universal Client v26.8.4.
Readers. HID NFC enabled readers and any HID ecosystem compatible partner solutions. Signo across the range, and iCLASS SE or multiCLASS SE with firmware version 8.9 or higher. Older proximity readers cannot read these credentials, so a reader and firmware audit belongs at the front of any project.
Devices. Apple Wallet on iOS, Google Wallet on Android, including Apple Watchand Wear OS. Current device support is published on HID's compatible device list.
Licensing. Credentials are sold as an annual subscription and managed through your existing license manager. Credentials can be added mid-term at a prorated rate, aligned to your existing renewal date. Allow up to 10 calendar days after the initial license is applied for the HID Origo service to be activated.
One credential, more than the front door
The reason mobile credentials are worth the programme effort is that the badge stops beinga door key and becomes a workplace credential.
HID reports that it and its technology partners have built an ecosystem of more than 100 devices spanning 12 or more workplace use cases, from elevators and speed gates to lockers, secure print, desk signs, meeting room booking, EV charging, and workstation login.
Secure print is a good illustration of the value sitting outside the door. HID, citing The Swenson Group, reports that 68% of organisations have experienced at least one print-related data breach, and that authenticated release can cut print costs by up to 30%. The same credential a person taps at the entrance releases their documents at the printer.
Those are HID and partner integrations rather than Acre Access Control features, so scope them with your integrator. But they are the reason a single mobile credential tends to earn adoption in a way a second plastic card never does.
Acre's position is the same here as everywhere else. Work with the readers and controllers you already own, add what you need, and move at your own pace.
Frequently asked questions
Do cardholders need to install an app?
No. The credential is delivered as a pass to Apple Wallet or Google Wallet. Acre Access Control also supports HID BLE credentials through the mobile application, where the cardholder opens the app to present the credential.
Can we use mobile credentials and plastic cards at the same time?
Yes. A mobile credential presents at the reader like any other card, so a mixed estate is normal during a transition.
What happens when someone leaves?
An administrator revokes the credential from the person's record in Acre Access Control. The reader denies access as soon as the revocation is processed.
Do we need to replace our readers?
Only if they are not HID NFC enabled. HID Signo and iCLASS SE or multiCLASS SE readers on firmware 8.9 or higher are supported.
How quickly can we start?
Allow around 10 calendar days from the initial license being applied for the HID Origo service to activate, then provisioning takes a few clicks per cardholder.
